Abstract

Sergio Almaraz Paz's speech, like that of other Bolivian revolutionary nationalists, sought to strengthen national identity by taking advantage of open spaces as unintended consequences of a militarily bipolar world. The evils caused by imperialism and the situation of dependency were considered "deviations" from the project of modernity that could be corrected if the popular sectors took power; precisely these sectors, and not the national bourgeoisie, were considered the true subject of history (Richards, 2002).
