e National Conservatory of Chile and the 1928 reform: a look at the exclusion of popular music
Abstract
The reform of the National Conservatory of Music Chile in 1928 has consequences to this day in its heir institution, the Department of Music of the University of Chile. In this, popular music has been excluded from academic training and disciplinary development not only in terms of the repertoire, but also in terms of the musical experience itself. In this sense, this exclusion will be reviewed against popular music and the purification epistemology (Ochoa Gautier 2006) of self-styled ‘serious’ music. Finally, a perspective will be proposed that goes beyond the modern-Eurocentric functioning of the Conservatory / Department of Music that today is within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile.
