The sale of women in the high mountains of Guerrero. Brief note
Abstract
A tradition has been turned against girls in the high mountains of Guerrero, Mexico, selling women. I witnessed this practice during visits to the municipalities of Cochoapa el Grande and Metlatónoc between 2012 and 2015. It is usually considered a dowry that the groom makes to the father of the bride to cover part of the expenses that were required during their growth and development. However, younger women (12 or 13 years old) cost more than older women. The classical vision of anthropology would suggest us to address this question as cultural since it is a tradition with which they have lived hundreds of years in the community. Is this an assimilated cultural perversion? The fundamental rights of women are being continuously violated in the municipality and throughout the high mountain region of Guerrero, Mexico. The macho traditions and the excessive consumption of alcohol allow the reproduction of pre-modern practices today. In what we debate, the girls of Cochoapa el Grande continue to be sold and marriages are arranged without their consent.
