The construction that exterminates the environment in Guatemala
Abstract
In 2014, the Spanish company Grupo Cobra, which belongs to Activities of Construction and Services (ACS), chaired by the Spanish Florentino Pérez, started the Renace project in Guatemala, which consists of the construction of a hydroelectric plant to satisfy 15% of the country's electricity demand (Paullier, 2016). The construction is located in the Cahabón river basin, which is one of the largest rivers in Guatemala, however, this project is causing a 30-kilometer drought, in the same way, the river could lose 90% of its flow, affecting the right to access to drinking water for more than 29,000 Quekchi indigenous people who live near the river, thus violating their human rights (Carrasco, 2016).
