Abstract

The testament of the Catholic Queen Queen Isabel, drawn up in the town of Medina del Campo on October 12, 1504, orders: "Let them not cease to conquer Africa and fight for the faith against the faithful." The text not only records the linguistic properties: lexicon, syntax and pragmatic configuration of the 16th century language that has already been formalized for 14 years by Nebrija, but also expresses the social and ideological prominence (Catholic fundamentalism) of its place of enunciation; the enunciative motor can be consigned in a brief syntagically bimembered phrase and concomitant on the semantic plane: faith is empire and empire is faith. On a medieval legitimation, the religious imperative, Isabel spurs the modern construction of the empire; since historical criticism has pointed out the continuity between the Reconquest, the dominance of the western Mediterranean along with the Canaries, the exploration of America and the control of enclaves in North Africa.
